Whilst in San Francisco, we popped into David Eggers wonderful literacy centre/come pirate shop. The back half of the centre is a project based learning centre, helping children from 6 - 18 years with writing skills. The front half of the shop is a pirate shop that sells all manner of pirate related things; treasure shining kits, eye patches and tattoos. The idea being that they will get ownership over their work and ideas and inspire them to write more. All proceeds from the shop go to the non-profit based organisation. It was a wonderful experience and such a great idea to inspire kids to use their own voice through writing.
