Exhibition Building of 1892
We went along to the Finders Keepers market at the Old Museum on the weekend. Highlights would have to be the actual building itself…. It was great to go back and see the place, I haven’t been there since I was a child. The garden seemed much smaller, and not quite the same without the dinosaurs… The building was amazing, lots of old signs though, old exhibition installation bits and bobs hanging around, great typography and stunning views and vistas.
Built in 1891 for the Queensland National Agricultural and Industrial Association, it was later taken over in 1897, due to financial issues by the State Government. The building was the main concert hall from 1891 to 1930 and later played the host to the state Museum and the Queensland Art Gallery, while the buildings were being built at South Bank in the late 70s and 80s. It was architect designed by George Henry Male Addison, who also designed a few landmark Queensland buildings, including the Mansions in George Street and the Albert Street Uniting Church.
The Queensland Youth Orchestra now uses the building and it can be hired for private events.
