Gardens in the sky

Jacek Perkowski, a Polish rock musician lives in a modernist home with a difference, it has a seven inch rug of grass for a roof. The architect Robert Konieczny, of Katowice-based KWK Promes wanted the building to have the roof act less as a structure and more of a extension of the ground. The benefits for having a roof top garden are numbered, less heating and insulation, greater oxygen production, the grass assists by removing airborne pollution and amongst many more, a great place for a party! Historically Scandinavians have been building sodden rooves for years, however in Australia, the movement is just taking off.  For assistance with local projects, Brisbane based Sidonie Carpenter is the vice president of Green Roofs Australia. Her company is a not-for-profit membership organisation that promotes “green roofs as an effective response to climate change and city heat island effects, and to reduce buildings’ carbon footprints”.

Contact Sidonie for information of how the organisation can assist you in building your very own garden in the sky! greenroofs.wordpress.com
