100 Abandoned Houses
Curious Kevin Bauman started photographing abandoned homes in the mid 90s. He was interested firstly in the creative process, but the idea of photographing left homes quickly grew into something much bigger, a project that captures 100 of these homes. The areas he looks at are mainly in Detroit, once suburbs filled with affluent homes and mansions that have since fallen into disrepair. His photographs are wonderfully haunting and say a lot, without having to say much about the situation at all.
‘100 seemed like a lot, although the number of abandoned houses in Detroit is more like 12,000. Encompassing an area of over 138 square miles, Detroit has enough room to hold the land mass of San Francisco, Boston, and Manhattan Island, yet the population has fallen from close to 2 million citizens, to most likely less than 800,000. With such a dramatic decline, the abandoned house problem is not likely to go away any time soon’
